CSUS Business Internships: Employer Instructions & Guidelines

Business Internships & Co-Ops: Employer Instructions & Guidelines

A Dynamic Partnership
A successful internship/co-op program is a dynamic partnership between the student, the employer, and the university. Today, students are faced with countless choices, overwhelming information and competing demands. They are required to understand and master broader skills in an increasingly complex and changing world.

The Power of Learning
In addressing these realities, the College of Business Administration embraces the opportunity to complement classroom learning with valuable work experience through our Internship & Co-Op Program.
The power of experiential learning can transform any student’s educational experience by moving knowledge out of the classroom and into the world of action where ideas can be tested and workplace skills can be developed.

Setting Up the Internship
To arrange for an Internship through the College of Business Administration, please follow these simple steps:

    1. Review Developing the Position
    2. To qualify for academic credit, the position must :
      • Be a Paid Internship
      • Provide a minimum of 10 hours/week for undergraduate students and 15 hours/week for graduate students over a 15 week semester
      • Provide a new learning experience for the student at a level of work that merits university credit. [i.e. no or very limited clerical, filing, telemarketing, door-to-door sales, etc.]
      • Provide supervision to the student intern
    3. Once our office receives the submitted Internship Position Description, it will be reviewed and if approved, posted on the Business Job Board.
    4. It is the students' responsibility to contact employers directly to request interviews. When students contact your office regarding your Internship opportunity, your office makes the arrangements for an interview and all hiring procedures. Student Eligibility reviews the eligibility requirements our students must meet in order to earn academic credit for an internship or co-op.
    5. Notify the Office of Student Affairs that your position has been filled/closed by going back to your job posting in the Business Job Board and requesting that it be closed.
    6. Supervise and monitor the student's work. For ideas, review The Successful Supervisor.
    7. Provide a letter to the student's faculty advisor two weeks prior to the end of the semester stating that the student has or has not completed the assignment and to what extent the student has attained her/his learning objectives. The Link to Academic Calendar provides important dates relating to the CSUS academic year.
    8. Be available for consultation with both the student and the faculty advisor when needed
